2013 Annual Rankings

Advisor Perspectives, a leading publisher serving financial advisors and the financial advisory community, has announced its Venerated Voices awards for articles published in 2013. Rankings were issued in three categories: The Top 25 Venerated Voices by Firm, The Top 25 Venerated Voices by Author and The Top 10 Venerated Voices by Commentary.

Grantham Mayo Van Otterloo (GMO), located in Boston, received first place in the Top 25 Venerated Voices by Firm category. California-based Oaktree Capital Management received second, and California’s Pring Turner Capital Group came in third.

Among individual commentators, the most-widely read were Jeremy Grantham, Ben Inker and James Montier, all of GMO. Fourth place went to Howard Marks of Oaktree Capital.

The most-widely read commentary of 2013 was What's the Best Asset Allocation When the Business Cycle Moves to Stage IV? by Martin Pring of Pring Turner Capital Management, published Feb. 4. In it, he discussed the business cycle progression and its relationship with various asset classes.

In second, tied, were Ben Inker’s We Have Met the Enemy, and He Is Us and Jeremy Grantham’s Investing in a Low-Growth World, both published Feb. 7. Inker’s commentary sheds light on types of diversification and their sustainability. Grantham analyzed the possibility of lower GDP growth and its implications for investors.

The REAL Great Rotationby Richard Bernstein of Richard Bernstein Advisors, published June 6, came in third place. Bernstein discussed the “Great Rotation,” traditionally a shift from bonds to stocks, and argued that the proper rotation should be from non-US assets to US assets.

Advisor Perspectives’ website attracts more than 175,000 unique visitors per month, virtually all of them financial advisors serving high- and ultra-high net worth individuals. The company publishes economic and market commentaries that are submitted by fund companies, advisors and independent research firms. In 2013, more than 2,600 commentaries were published and made available through a daily newsletter, Research Perspectives, which the company emails to its subscribers.

Venerated Voices™ rankings were determined based on the number of unique readers of each commentary, using data provided electronically by the third-party web analytics service WebTrends. The data were normalized to reflect the fact that usage of Advisor Perspectives’ website grew steadily over the course of the quarter. For the annual awards, any firm or author that has submitted at least three commentaries that year is eligible. Any participant is eligible to receive a quarterly award. Each firm and author was assigned a relative score, with a score of 100 equal to average readership.

Advisor Perspectives was founded in 2007 and is based in Lexington, Mass. In addition to Research Perspectives, it publishes a widely read weekly newsletter, Advisor Perspectives, which contains original articles on the markets, the economy and practice management.

Advisor Perspectives will continue to provide quarterly updates to its rankings and issue annual Venerated Voices™ awards.
