Q1 2013 Rankings

Advisor Perspectives, a leading publisher serving financial advisors and the financial advisory community, has published its Venerated Voices awards for articles published in Q1 2013. Rankings were issued in three categories: The Top 25 Venerated Voices by Firm, The Top 25 Venerated Voices by Author and The Top 10 Venerated Voices by Commentary.

Leading the Top 25 Venerated Voices by Firm category was Grantham Mayo Van Otterloo (GMO), whose chairman, Jeremy Grantham, is one of the most closely followed contributors to Advisor Perspectives, followed by the California-based Pring Turner Capital Management. In third place was J.P. Morgan Funds, followed Oaktree Capital Management out of Los Angeles.

Among individual commentators, the most-widely read was a combined posting of two commentaries by Ben Inker and Jeremy Grantham, both with GMO. Second place went to James Montier, also with GMO. In third place was Doug Ramsey and Eric Weigel of Leuthold Weeden Capital Management. Martin Pring of Pring Turner Capital Management was the fourth most followed advisor.

The most-widely read commentary of 2012 was a combined publication of two commentaries, Investing in a Low-Growth World, by Jeremy Grantham and We Have Met the Enemy, and He Is Us, by Ben Inker. Grantham’s piece discussed lower GDP growth outlook and Inker’s piece argues that certain strategies, such as selling equity put options and buying quality stocks, are better diversifiers than commodities or TIPS. These were published on February 7. In second was Martin Pring’s What's the Best Asset Allocation When the Business Cycle Moves to Stage IV?, published on February 4. Pring elaborated on favorable investing based on the business cycle. Published on February 22, The Four New Defensive Strategies, by Russ Koesterich of BlackRock followed in third place. In it, he described four strategies to protect recent gains.

Advisor Perspectives’ website currently attracts over 175,000 unique visitors per month, virtually all of them financial advisors serving high- and ultra-high net worth individuals. The company publishes economic and market commentaries that were submitted by fund companies, advisors and independent research firms. In Q1 2013, over 600 such commentaries were published and made available through a daily newsletter, Research Perspectives, which the company emails to its subscribers.

Venerated Voices™ rankings were determined based on the number of unique readers of each commentary, using data provided electronically by the third-party web analytics service WebTrends. The data were normalized to reflect the fact that usage of Advisor Perspectives’ website grew steadily over the course of the quarter. While for the annual awards for the firm and author, a minimum of three commentaries must have been submitted during the year, any participant is eligible to receive a quarterly award. Each firm and author was assigned a relative score, with a score of 100 equal to average readership.

Advisor Perspectives was founded in 2007 and is based in Lexington, Mass. In addition to Research Perspectives, it publishes a widely read weekly newsletter, Advisor Perspectives, which contains original articles on the markets, the economy and practice management.

Advisor Perspectives will continue to provide quarterly updates to its rankings, as well as issuing annual Venerated Voices™ awards.
